This bachelor’s thesis discusses the development of community-based tourism in Ecuador among the Shuar community in the region of Morona Santiago. The methods of investigation are literature review, interviews with the local entrepreneurs and their subsequent content analysis. The thesis focuses on the development of community tourism, the products and ideas offered by the locals, as well as how this type of business is perceived by the local community. It discusses the funding, legislation and organizations involved in tourism, and the overall operation of tourism. It considers the proceeds of the business, what happens to it and what local people use it for. Finally, it discusses self-promotion and marketing, sustainable development, and sustainable tourism. The research results show that the legal norms applied in the field of community tourism sometimes diverge from the reality that is reflected through the responses of local entrepreneurs.

Three Essays on Asymmetric Information in SME Finance and Microfinance

This dissertation thesis consists of three essays on asymmetric information problem in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) finance and Microfinance. The aim of the thesis is to address the key problem in the credit rationing in the SME finance and microfinance and strive to improve the credit analyzing model with the help of soft information. The first essay investigates the factors that hinder the growth of SMEs using a World Bank dataset, and access to finance is found to be their biggest constrain to growth. Asymmetric information between small business owners and banks generates high interest rates, complex application procedures and high collateral requirements, which are found to be the biggest obstacles business owners face when they seek external financing. Small business owners who cannot get loans from banks will turn to microfinance as an alternative source of funds. In the second essay, a new dataset from disintermediated Peer to Peer (P2P) lending market is used to investigate credit rationing efficiency when there is no financial intermediary. Commercialization in Microfinance

This thesis is focused on commercialization in microfinance. Particularly on one of its possible negative impacts - the mission drift. Microfinance could be described as a useful financial tool that makes it possible to provide banking services, usually small loans and deposits, to rural poor people who live in places where it is hard to access the traditional banking sector. Commercialization of microfinance institutions means that the MFIs seek for commercial ways of funding. This usually happens when, for instance, some of the microfinance NGOs transforms into regulated commercial entity. Mission drift is then a situation when the microfinance institutions (MFIs) commercialize and abandon some of their poorest clients in order to pursuit some non-social goal such as sustainability or profitability. Therefore the MFIs drift from their original mission which is usually to fight the poverty. So far, there has not been conducted a lot of research on this topic. Furthermore, neither the microfinance experts agree with each other about the existence of mission drift. Therefore the main goal of this thesis is to closer inspect the mission drift on data from the MIX database. To do this we have used the regression analysis, combined with analysis of historical performance of the observed MFIs.

The Change of Developmnet Aid's Paradigm on the Microfinance Example

The Thesis "The Change of Development Aid's Paradigm on the Microfinance Example" deals with the issue of microfinance from the point of view of development theories. Microfinance as a form of development aid is a relatively new phenomenon. It is a form of a direct financial support of small entrepreneurs in developing countries. Since the 90s commercial institutions have become increasingly involved in the process of microfinancing and projects and financing have gone beyond borders of individual states. After 2000 microfinance has become a part of the agenda of international organizations. In the last century, there was a dynamic development in the area of development theories. The change of development aid's paradigm, which took place during the 90s, marked a culmination of this process. Since the 90s the term Comprehensive Development Framework is being used. This thesis verifies validity of the subsequent hypothesis, interest in microfinancing is in accordance with the change of development theories paradigm. The incorporation of microfinance into the development aid's agenda is assessed by concepts the new paradigm works with; the human potential (individual as an active player of development), role of the institutional environment, multidisciplinarity and sustainable development.

Microfinance institutions: an empirical study from Moldova

The present master thesis deals with non-banking microfinance institutions and examines its abilities and role in the poverty alleviation process. It is more than necessary to pay attention to the rural sector and its development as any successful transition of the economy requires transition of the rural sector as well. In many transition economies people in the rural areas continue to live on the edge of poverty, engaged in subsistence agriculture and remain susceptible to wide range of shocks. In such countries rural population unlike urban one did not benefit to the same extend from transition and need special attention and supporting policy measures. Due to low penetration rate of microfinance institutions into rural areas, lacking or insufficient size of collateral, financial illiteracy many poor but active man face problems to obtaining finance for the development of new income opportunities. In this context the master thesis emphasizes the role of savings and credit associations, which unlike the commercial banks operate mainly in rural sector, have the most significant effect on poverty alleviation. Abstract This thesis deals with the concept of microfinance and its development in the Czech nonprofit sector. In the first part the author deals with a brief description of this concept and its historical development over the last fifty years. Followed by analysis of itself, that tries to deal with the fact that despite the rapid global development of this worldwide phenomenon, microfinance in the Czech Republic is still a relatively new phenomenon. Author attempted semi structured interviews to map key players in the industry, discover their interests, attitudes, resources, and their declared objectives. The main point of the analysis is myElen.com, Czech internet portal, which is pretty much the main driver of all the happenings in the field of microfinance in this country. In conclusion the author offers an evaluation of analytical findings and suggests possible future steps to further exploration, as well as recommends the most appropriate steps in policy-making.

MASTER THESIS Analysis of publicly listed microfinance equity diversification potential and possible mission drift Karel Pfeffer 2017 Abstract The objective of this master thesis is to investigate, whether equity of publicly listed Microfinance institutions (MFIs) can be used for portfolio diversification, while these MFIs still maintain its original social mission. To explore these two aspects of publicly listed MFIs, this study is split in two major parts. The first part is focused on the comparison of risk and return characteristics of selected MFIs shares with conventional financial institutions shares and market equity benchmark indices. The analysis indicates no significant diversification potential in publicly listed microfinance equity. The second part of this thesis is exploring the impact of IPO on publicly listed MFIs social outreach. It was found some evidence of a drift from the original social mission among selected MFIs. However, there is not enough evidence to claim that for-profit investment cause long-term significant operational change of MFIs.

Loan Portfolio Quality of Microfinancial Institutions

The first chapter of this thesis is an introduction to issue of microfinance. This chapter is about characteristic, targets and social importance of microfinance loans and about birth and history where microfinance started to help and who is founder of microfinance. There is also describing of today's microfinance market, the distribution and characteristics every single microfinance regions: number of microfinance institution, gross loan portfolio and another main attribute for every region. The aim of next chapter is to review actual trends which are typical for microfinance sector. The most important trends are new products, separation microfinance institutions for profit and non-profit institutions, financial sources, rising regulation of microfinancial institution and changing quality of gross loan portfolio in time. The last chapter is about the quality of loan portfolio selected states from Latin Amerika and Asia where the impact of internal and macroeconomics variables to quality of gross loan portfolio is tested by regression model.
